Smoke Alarm Safety
Smoke alarms save lives if used and placed properly
At a minimum, place one on each level of your home, and for extra safety, install smoke alarms inside and outside each sleeping area
Smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling or 6 to 8 inches below the ceiling on the walls. In all cases, always follow the manufactures instructions
Smoke alarms can be bought at many hardware, home supply, or general merchandise stores. Make sure the alarm is UL-listed
I the alarm goes off while cooking, do not disable the alarm; you may not remember to put the batteries back in. Instead, clear the smoke from the area by opening a window and using a fan
Replace your batteries twice a year. Pick easy to remember dates, such as when you change your clocks to daylight savings time. An alarm that is chirping generally means a low battery
Keep alarms clean. Dust and debris can interfere with their operation. Vacuum over and around your smoke alarm regularly. Most smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years
Test your alarms monthly; most have a test button on them
